Obama’s speech at Osawatomie was meant to echo Theodore Roosevelt’s 1910 New Nationalism speech in which he articulated his progressive vision for the federal government but this suggests it is an echo of an echo, as it were.
One of the few truly underground publications, Osawatomie was published by the Weather Underground clandestinely while they were on the run from the FBI. The photo used on the cover of this issue is the now-famous ‘The Soiling of Old Glory’ taken by Boston Herald-American photographer Stanley Forman at an anti-busing rally held in Boston on April 5, 1976.
This is another one of over 100 original copies from my collection of sixties underground newspapers that will be on display for a one-night only show this Friday at Spoke Art Gallery.
Opening reception - Friday, January 13, 2012
