Comparing the expresson of the Marine in the first and third panels, you see the withering effect of combat experience but it is not so marked as you might expect. More suprising is the countenance of soldiers in the middle panel. Their eyes are often wider and shows how the experience of combat puts one in a heightened state.
Coming down from that heightened state is the difficult part.
